Arthritis Foundation pushes for new Minnesota camp for children ...

The Arthritis Foundation is taking steps to help children and teens living with arthritis get to know others dealing with the same disorder in our region.

Arthritis is more common than you might think -- it affects 300,000 children nationwide. A new camp in Minnesota will bring those people together, allowing them to identify with one another.

Tori Byklum is your typical teenager, a young soul, with big dreams.

"I want to be either a rheumatologist or a doctor of some sort," says Tori.

She wants to leave behind a legacy to help people who live with arthritis each and every day just like her.

Tori: "Most people think of arthritis like you can't move and you're always stiff and stuff, and most of the kids that I know are active and do sports and all that."

She was diagnosed with the disorder when she was just five years old.

"I couldn't ride my bike, I had to push it. And I couldn't open the door, so I had to pound on it. And then I was laying in bed and my neck started hurting and like my legs and fingers," said Tori.

Tori "I've met a lot of new friends there and you don't feel like you're an outsider like you do when you go to other camps, like you're the only person. Because everybody there has arthritis."

Next summer a brand new camp is opening much closer to home in Maple Lake, Minnesota.

"The camp offers swimming, horseback riding, arts and crafts, sailing, fishing... All the great things that are involved in a summer camp," said Kelly Brekke with the Arthritis Foundation.

The new camp is modeled after the other camp in Wisconsin.

Kelly: "All the camp counselors are former campers, so they can share their experiences with the new campers."

Tori: "They understand in the morning if you're stiff or if you're just not feeling well."

Kelly: "It's the friendships that are formed that bring the campers back."

The new camp, Camp Cambria, is about an hour northwest of Minneapolis in Maple Lake, not to be confused with Maple Lake just east of Grand Forks. It will include a bus service from Fargo, so all the campers can ride down together.

Saturday is world arthritis day and Stacie and Molly will be attending the Arthritis Walk at Choice Health and Fitness. Registration begins at 8:30 AM.

Welcome to New Tunes Tues, where I tell you what newly released songs/albums/music videos etc require your attention immediately. The just-announced news that Britney Spears titled her upcoming album Britney Jean is great, sure. But until we hear that album when it comes out in December, let’s take a listen to these five catchy beats, shall we?

TLC, “Meant to Be.” TLC’s biopic premieres next week on VH1, and their greatest hits album, 20, drops today. This song, “Meant To Be,” was written for the movie specifically, but it also appears on the album and is the band’s first single in six years. Lovin’ it.

Eminem, “Rap God.” It seems like Em is releasing one new song a week leading up to the November 5 release of The Marshall Mathers LP Part 2, doesn’t it? This is one of my favorites so far though because it’s the fast-talking Eminem lyrics fans are used to. And it reminds me of “Crazy In Love,” which is like my favorite Eminem song of all time.

The Wanted, “Show Me Love (America).” Ariana Grande‘s boy toy and his British bandmates also have an album coming out in early November, and this song is on it. This video just came out, like, yesterday, and The Wanted fans are freakin’ out over it already. Probably because black and white makes everything so much more sexy.

Air Pollution 'Fertilizer' Threatens National Parks

An influx of nitrogen-based pollution is acting as an unwanted fertilizer and is disrupting the ecology of dozens of national parks, according to new research.

Of the 45 U.S. parks the research team studied, 38 were blanketed with high levels of nitrogen-based air pollution from power plants, car exhaust and industrial agriculture, according to the study, which was published in the journal Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics.

The resulting nitrogen overload could disrupt the nutrient cycling in the soil, fuel algal blooms and change water acidity levels in the country's national parks, the research suggests. [Top 10 Most Visited National Parks]

Nitrogen disruption

Though about 78 percent of the Earth's atmosphere is made up of nitrogen, most of that nitrogen is bound to itself in a relatively inert form.

However, combustion, power generation and industrial agriculture all add highly reactive forms of nitrogen — either ammonia or nitrogen oxides into the environment. Because those forms can be readily absorbed into the soil and taken up by plants, they can alter plants' growth patterns and disrupt whole ecosystems.

To see how all this nitrogen affected the country's wild places, Raluca Ellis, an atmospheric and applied sciences professor at Harvard University, and colleagues combined data on nitrogen emissions with a continental simulation to describe how the nitrogen would be deposited.

The team found 24 out of 45 parks were well above the critical nitrogen-load threshold that could disrupt ecosystems, and another 14 were just above that threshold. Most of that came from nitrogen oxides in air pollution.

What the future holds

The team then used several predictions of future emissions based on assumptions of technological and socioeconomic changes to see how the situation might change by 2050.

Though nitrogen oxide emissions are expected to fall by between 40 and 85 percent by 2050, overall nitrogen levels won't change much, because ammonia emissions will likely rise by 19 to 50 percent.

"The increase in the U.S. is mainly due to increases in fertilizer use and livestock driven by a growing population and thus higher food demand," the authors wrote in the paper.

By that estimate, 17 to 25 parks will be overloaded with nitrogen by 2050. Even if fuel-based emissions were completely eliminated, 14 national parks will exceed the critical nitrogen levels at that time.

The findings suggest that policies to reduce nitrogen pollution should take into account agriculture-related uses, the authors note. The Environmental Protection Agency is considering tough new rules that would further decrease nitrogen oxide emissions.

"However, our results suggest that the benefit of these actions will be limited without a parallel plan to decrease [ammonia] emissions," the authors write.

Officials: Bombing at mosque kills Afghan governor

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — A bomb planted inside a mosque killed the governor of Afghanistan's eastern Logar province as he was delivering a speech Tuesday morning to mark the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, officials said.

The explosion at the main mosque in the provincial capital of Puli Alam killed Governor Arsallah Jamal and wounded 15 people — five of them critically, said the governor's spokesman, Din Mohammad Darwesh.

Jamal, 47, was a close confidant of President Hamid Karzai and served as his campaign manager during the 2009 presidential elections. He also served as governor of eastern Khost province until he was appointed to his current post in Logar in April.

A high-profile target, he had survived a number of assassination attempts in the past, including with suicide bombings.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack but the Taliban have been targeting Afghan officials, military and NATO troops as part of their campaign to retake territory as international troops draw down ahead of a full pullout at the end of 2014.

Tuesday's explosion took place as Jamal was speaking inside the mosque to worshippers gathered for one of Islam's holiest days, said Logar's deputy police chief, Rais Khan Abbul Rahimzai.

The bomb was apparently planted inside the microphone in the front part of the mosque, said two officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Jamal was recently in the spotlight following his revelation that a senior commander of the Pakistani Taliban was taken into custody by American forces in Logar province on Oct. 5.

U.S. officials confirmed that Latif Mehsud, a leader of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, or TTP, was captured by U.S. forces in a military operation.

At the time, Jamal told The Associated Press that Mehsud was captured as he was driving along a main highway in Mohammad Agha district. The road links the province with the Afghan capital, Kabul.

Christina Milian Gears up for "Dancing with the Stars" Practice

Never failing to draw attention with her stunning good looks, Christina Milian arrived for "Dancing with the Stars" practice at a dance studio today (October 12) in Hollywood, California.

Ready for action, the 32-year-old dancer showed up wearing a black "Viva" cap, lack scarf, a white off-shoulder tee, black sweatpants and red and white Niki high tops. She carried a black gym bag and held a pair of stylish heels and a can of Red Bull in her hand.

About her upcoming performance, Millian tweeted, "It's important to take a quick break and just be goofy.. Never wanna lose track of how fun this actually is. Monday nights performance is gonna be a fun one!"

Canada author Alice Munro wins Nobel

Oct. 10: Alice Munro, the renowned Canadian short-story writer whose visceral work explores the tangled relationships between men and women, small-town existence and the fallibility of memory, won the 2013 Nobel Prize in Literature today. Munro, 82, is the 13th woman to win the prize.

Announcing the award in Stockholm, the Swedish Academy said that Munro is a “master of the contemporary short story”.

Munro, who lives in Clinton, a town in Ontario, told a writer from The Globe and Mail earlier this year that she planned to retire after Dear Life, her 14th story collection.

In a statement from Penguin Random House, her publisher, Munro said that she was “amazed, and very grateful”.

She added, “I’m particularly glad that winning this award will please so many Canadians,” she said. “I’m happy, too, that this will bring more attention to Canadian writing.”

Munro revolutionised the architecture of short stories, often beginning a story in an unexpected place and then moving backward or forward in time. She brought a modesty and subtle wit to her work that her admirers often traced to her background growing up in rural Canada.

She said she fell into writing short stories, the form that would make her famous, somewhat by accident.

“For years and years I thought that stories were just practice, till I got time to write a novel,” she told the New Yorker in 2012. “Then I found that they were all I could do, and so I faced that. I suppose that my trying to get so much into stories has been a compensation.”

The Nobel, one of the most prestigious and lucrative prizes in the world, is given to a writer for a lifetime’s body of work, rather than a single novel, short story or collection. The winner receives 8 million Swedish kronor, or about $1.2 million.

Previous winners in recent years include Mo Yan, a Chinese writer, in 2012; the Swedish poet Tomas Tranströmer, in 2011; Mario Vargas Llosa, the Peruvian writer, in 2010; and in 2009, Herta Müller, a Romanian-born German novelist and essayist.

The 18 members of the Swedish Academy choose the winner in secrecy and reveal the nominees after each award is announced.

Each year, a handful of the same names are floated as contenders, including the Americans Joyce Carol Oates and Philip Roth. This year, Ladbrokes, the British bookmaking firm, gave the odds to Haruki Murakami, the Japanese author of 1Q84, at 5-2, followed by Munro, at 4-1.

Roth and Munro were the subject of even more intense speculation than usual this year.
