Wrong. Twitter CEO Dick Costolo says the job is "psychologically damaging."
Costolo made the comment in an on-stage interview at Fast Company's Innovation Uncensored conference in San Francisco with Andreessen Horowitz venture capitalist Ben Horowitz, whom he's turned to for management advice at times.
At Twitter, Costolo has had to put that advice into practice, reshaping his top management team and quelling turmoil in the ranks.
Here are all the reasons Costolo offered for why the job is hard on the head:
You must force people to disagree. When Costolo first got to Twitter, "there was a culture that we don't openly disagree with each other in meetings," he said. He had to get his managers to either "vocally dissent" or "commit to what we've decided."?
When employees are sad, you cannot sympathize. Managers must "empathize, not sympathize," Costolo said. When an engineer says, "I'm really sad because I'm not working on project A," a manager has to honestly say that the project is not a priority for the company.
Everyone expects you have the answers. "One of the things I'm really good at is knowing that I don't have to be the smartest person in the room," Costolo said. "Someone on the team will say, 'Well, Dick, what do you think?' And I'll say, 'I don't really have any idea, so you guys are going to have to keep discussing it.'"
Your employees judge you against past bosses. "Our chief financial officer, Ali Rowghani, reported to Steve Jobs" at Pixar, the animation studio, Costolo said. "I say these things and he looks at me, and I'm sure he's thinking, 'That's not what Steve would have said.'" The upside: "If you take your ego out of it, you can learn a truckload from these guys."
And sometimes you just have to give in.?"Because we've got a really strong senior team now, I try to make sure that I don't go against the will of the team too frequently," Costolo said. And if he disagrees with them but decides to go along, "I have to do what I tell my managers and leave the room and commit to that decision."
No one's going to like you.?"Managing by trying to be liked is the path to ruin."

RIVERSIDE, Calif -- Nitrogen is a beneficial plant fertilizer in small amounts, but large amounts cause negative impacts on ecosystems, such as water pollution, acidification of soils, increased productivity of invasive species, increased probability of wildfire, and a decline of native plant diversity.
Over the past century human activities have more than quadrupled the amount of plant-available nitrogen inputs from the atmosphere compared to natural inputs. What impact does this have on plant species diversity across the United States?
A group of scientists, including researchers at the University of California, Riverside, has received a one-year $100,000 grant from the John Wesley Powell Center for Analysis and Synthesis of the U.S. Geological Survey to examine the evidence for impacts of pollutant nitrogen on plant species diversity across the United States. Specifically, the group, called the Powell Center Working Group on Diversity and Nitrogen Deposition, will synthesize data sets on the impacts of nitrogen deposition on plant diversity.
"Documentation of the impacts of nitrogen deposition on plant diversity are generally lacking in the U.S., but observations from Europe indicate biodiversity losses in areas with high levels of nitrogen pollution," said Edith B. Allen, a professor of plant ecology in the Department of Botany and Plant Sciences and the grant's principal investigator at UC Riverside. Other principal investigators are at the U.S. Geological Survey and the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Nitrogen's primary sources are agriculture, industry and automobile emissions. Nitrogen deposition refers to the input of reactive nitrogen species from the atmosphere to the biosphere. The pollutants that contribute to nitrogen deposition derive mainly from nitrogen oxides and ammonia.
Allen and her colleagues will evaluate patterns of plant diversity within plant communities along gradients ranging from high to low nitrogen deposition. The group will determine the gradients from a nationwide deposition model as well as measured deposition data from the Environmental Protection Agency and other agencies.
"We have already obtained plant diversity data from government and private sources," said Allen, a member of UCR's Center for Conservation Biology. "We will use our results to refine critical loads of nitrogen inputs that cause losses in diversity, and we will make available critical load data to regulatory agencies so that they can set air quality standards to preserve biodiversity."
The Powell Center Working Group on Diversity and Nitrogen Deposition has a total of 16 collaborators from the United States and Europe. At UCR, Allen will be joined in the research by Robert Johnson, an assistant specialist in the Center for Conservation Biology.
The John Wesley Powell Center for Analysis and Synthesis serves as a catalyst for innovative thinking in earth system science research by providing scientists from different backgrounds a place and time to focus on multi-faceted issues. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? WellPoint Inc.'s third-quarter earnings trumped Wall Street expectations but the health insurer's stock sank Wednesday, a day after President Barack Obama's re-election helped secure the future of his health care overhaul.
The overhaul aims to cover millions of uninsured people starting mostly in 2014, which means more business for insurers. But the fees and restrictions it imposes on the sector are expected to squeeze profits, especially for companies like WellPoint that focus a large portion of business on covering individuals and employees of small companies.
Shares of WellPoint and other major health insurers fell at a steeper clip than the 2 percent decline of the Standard & Poor's 500 index in Wednesday afternoon trading.
Citi analyst Carl McDonald said in a research note WellPoint's results would be viewed "quite favorably" without the election's impact.
"There's been an undercurrent of concern among many regarding the potential for bad news out of WellPoint's third quarter earnings, but the trepidation wasn't warranted," McDonald wrote, noting that the insurer easily beat expectations.
WellPoint reported net income of $691.2 million, or $2.15 per share, in the three months that ended Sept. 30. That's up 1 percent from $683.2 million, or $1.90 per share, a year ago.
Excluding investment gains, adjusted earnings were $2.09 per share.
Analysts expected $1.83 per share, according to FactSet.
The insurer's revenue, also excluding investments, was relatively flat at $15.13 billion, and that fell short of analyst expectations for $15.3 billion.
WellPoint said its enrollment slid more than 2 percent to about 33.5 million people compared to last year. The company operates Blue Cross Blue Shield plans in 14 states, including California, New York and Ohio.
WellPoint had not recorded a quarterly increase in earnings compared to the previous year since the first quarter of 2011, and the insurer's performance had frustrated several large shareholders. Chairwoman and CEO Angela Braly abruptly resigned with about a month left in the third quarter, and the company named John Cannon, its executive vice president and general counsel, to serve as interim CEO.
Wednesday's stock decline erased the 5 percent growth shares had seen since Braly left.
For the overhaul, insurers will start paying annual fees in 2014 that total $8 billion that year and rise after that. The law also restricts how much insurers can vary their pricing based on things like age and health, key tools they use to ensure that they have enough money to pay medical claims.
The overhaul also will require them to cover everyone who applies starting in 2014, even those already sick with expensive conditions such as diabetes. Additionally, the law stipulates that insurers spend certain percentages of the premiums they collect on care or pay rebates to customers.
Aside from the fees and restrictions, investors also worry that about online exchanges that will be set up as part of the overhaul to help people compare and buy insurance policies. They're concerned that these exchanges will take customers from the more-profitable employer-sponsored coverage market, Morningstar analyst Matt Coffina said.
The overhaul also stirs worry about Medicare Advantage plans, which are privately run versions of the government's Medicare program for the elderly and disabled. The law cuts funding to these plans, and that could hurt profits in this fast-growing segment.
But Coffina also said he thinks WellPoint is positioned well for the overhaul. He said the company has experience selling individual policies and a well-recognized brand that should help it do business on the exchanges.
WellPoint plans to spend between $200 million and $300 million next year to prepare for the 2014 coverage expansions, and Chief Financial Officer Wayne DeVeydt said he expects strong enrollment growth that year.
Shares of WellPoint dropped 5.5 percent, or $3.35, to close at $57.85 Wednesday. Competitor UnitedHealth Group Inc.'s stock fell almost 4 percent, or $2.13, to $54.26. Shares of Humana Inc., which has a large concentration of Medicare Advantage business, dropped 7.9 percent, or $6, to $70.16.

President Barack Obama handily defeated Gov. Mitt Romney and won himself a second term Tuesday after a bitter and historically expensive race that was primarily fought in just a handful of battleground states. Obama beat Romney after nabbing almost every one of the crucial battleground states.
Romney conceded in Boston in a heartfelt speech early Wednesday morning, at 1:00 AM ET. "Like so many of you, Paul [Ryan] and I have left everything on the field. We have given our all to this campaign," he said. "I so wish that I had been able to fulfill your hopes to lead your ocuntry in another direction." Romney congratulated the president and his campaign on their victory.
The Romney campaign's last-ditch attempt to put blue-leaning Midwestern swing states in play failed as Obama's Midwestern firewall sent the president back to the White House for four more years. Obama picked up the swing states of New Hampshire, Michigan, New Mexico, Iowa, Virginia, Wisconsin, Colorado, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, and Ohio. Of the swing states, Romney only picked up North Carolina. Florida is still too close to call, but even if Romney won the state, Obama still handily beats him in the Electoral College vote. The popular vote will most likely be much narrower than the president's decisive Electoral College victory.
The Obama victory marks an end to a years-long campaign that saw historic advertisement spending levels, countless rallies and speeches, and three much-watched debates.
The Romney campaign cast the election as a referendum on Obama's economic policies, frequently comparing him to former President Jimmy Carter and asking voters the Reagan-esque question of whether they are better off than they were four years ago. But the Obama campaign pushed back on the referendum framing, blanketing key states such as Ohio early on with ads painting him as a multimillionaire more concerned with profits than people. The Obama campaign also aggressively attacked Romney on reproductive rights issues, tying Romney to a handful of Republican candidates who made controversial comments about rape and abortion.
These ads were one reason Romney faced a steep likeability problem for most of the race, until his expert performance at the first presidential debate in Denver in October. After that debate, and a near universal panning of Obama's performance, Romney caught up with Obama in national polls, and almost closed his favoribility gap with the president. In polls, voters consistently gave him an edge over Obama on who would handle the economy better and create more jobs, even as they rated Obama higher on caring about the middle class.
But the president's Midwestern firewall--and the campaign's impressive grassroots operation--carried him through.?Ohio tends to vote a bit more Republican than the nation as a whole, but Obama was able to stave off that trend and hold an edge there over Romney, perhaps due to the president's support of the auto bailout three years ago. Romney and his running mate Paul Ryan all but moved to Ohio in the last weeks of the campaign, trying and ultimately failing to erase Obama's lead there.
A shrinking electoral battleground this year meant that only 14 states were really seen as in play, and both candidates spent most of their time and money there. Though national polls showed the two candidates in a dead heat, Obama consistently held a lead in the states that mattered. That, and his campaign's much-touted get out the vote efforts and overall ground game, may be what pushed Obama over the finish line.
Now, Obama heads back to office facing what will most likely be bitterly partisan negotiations over whether the Bush tax cuts should expire. The House will still be majority Republican, with Democrats maintaining their majority in the Senate.
The loss may provoke some soul searching in the Republican Party. This election was seen as a prime opportunity to unseat Obama, as polls showed Americans were unhappy with a sluggish economy, sky-high unemployment, and a health care reform bill that remained widely unpopular. Romney took hardline positions on immigration, federal spending, and taxes during the long Republican primary when he faced multiple challenges from the right. He later shifted to the center in tone on many of those issues, but it's possible the primary painted him into a too-conservative corner to appeal to moderates during the general election. The candidate also at times seemed unable to effectively counter Democratic attacks on his business experience and personal wealth.
