Flu and eating disorders: stay healthy | We Are the Real Deal

You are here: Home / Body Image / Flu and eating disorders: stay healthy

* It?s pretty. It?s real. Help your body ward it off.

?

If you have an eating disorder, whether or not you are in recovery, please know that this flu season holds particular risks for you.? An eating disorder is an illness and therefore compromises your immune system regardless of how you look or how you think about yourself.

If you binge or starve or purge, if you exercise more than others, if food dominates your thinking, if you isolate to feel safe then it?s vital that you pay attention to flu prevention activities.

If you catch the flu with a weak immune system you could be seriously ill for a long time.? It?s easier to catch the flu and more difficult to get better when your body is in a weakened condition.

Here?s a list of some self care actions for flu prevention:

  1. Nourish your body
  2. Keep yourself well hydrated
  3. Get 8-9 hours of sleep a night
  4. Wash your hands before and after?using any bathroom
  5. touching anything in public places
  6. eating or drinking in public places
  7. food handling

Also:

  1. Avoid touching your face and if you do, wash your hands and face.
  2. Use some kind of cleansing wipe on: dance bars, exercise equipment, keypads, toilet flushers, grocery cart handles ? anything that receives?a lot of hand contact, especially if it includes contact from others.
  3. Be assertive. If someone near you is coughing or sneezing into the air or into their hands and then touching something, please ask them to use tissue or leave the area, whichever is most appropriate.
  4. Check with your doctor about the advisability of taking vitamin supplements.
  5. Don?t get too hungry, thirsty or tired.

This flu season is particularly of concern.? It started earlier which means it may last longer.? It?s at high or extreme levels in every state.? Don?t be misled because the information coming out says the people most vulnerable are aged under eight or over 65.?Included are people who already suffer from some kind of illness. That means you.

Eating disorders are illnesses.? Please take care of yourself so you don?t get sick.

Questions for you:

  1. What are you doing to take care of yourself now?
  2. What more could you do?

Please share your answers in the comments and help each other.

Robots predicted to join family in home or serve in public setting ...

By Kim Leonard

Updated 7 hours ago

A robot called mObi senses when someone is nearby. It rolls gracefully on a single ball, navigating around people and furniture, and even talks a little.

This robot someday might be used in a home or public setting ? placed in a museum, for example, to glide over and provide information to a visitor admiring a painting, said Sarjoun Skaff, chief technology officer at Bossa Nova Robotics in the Strip District.

Like robotics companies worldwide, Bossa Nova is fine-tuning mObi for eventual consumer sales. Skaff believes robots could guide travelers through crowded airports, speaking their languages, or help shoppers find items in stores and provide product details.

Machines such as the 4-foot-tall mObi, sleek and nearly silent while in motion, have a future with families, Skaff says. But he acknowledges: ?We are still working on the home bit.?

Researchers predict that within 10 to 15 years, personal robots will become more commonplace, helping people keep their homes safe and perform household chores. Robot sales to consumers could quadruple to $6.5 billion by 2017, according to New York-based ABIresearch.

?We?re going to see a lot more activity around personal robots,? said Philip Solis, a research director with ABIresearch. ?A lot of the sensors you?d need in a robot are in smartphones right now.?

?Telepresence? robots that travel through rooms to check on things are a next step toward more intelligent machines. Romotive Inc.?s Romo is a simple version; the $150 remote-controlled robot with wheels carries an iPhone.

?The first consumer-valuable robotic services will show up before the end of this decade, from present-day vendors of washers and dryers,? predicts Frank Tobe, a researcher who publishes The Robot Report.

Smart appliances could provide ?hamper-to-hamper service ? dirty in, folded out,? Tobe said. He believes companies will offer practical home-use robots to help elderly or physically challenged people.

Single-purpose robots, such as Mass.-based iRobot Corp.?s vacuuming Roomba or Looj 330 gutter sweeper, which caused a stir at this month?s Consumer Electronics Show, ?brought the promise of C3PO and R2-D2 into the home,? said Maurice Leacock, a product manager with iRobot.

The company has sold more than 8 million cleaning robots.

The Looj, priced at $300, is ?exciting to people because it opens the imagination to what else can be done,? Leacock said.

iRobot tested a telepresence robot, built on its advanced Ava platform, at five hospitals. InTouch Health, a telemedicine company, worked with iRobot on the device, which moves through corridors on its own. These RP-VITA robots soon will be available for lease at about $6,000 a month.

In a home, ?we see a world in the future where there will be multiple robots to perform single tasks,? plus a central robot to communicate with them, Leacock said.

Willow Garage of Menlo Park, Calif., sells its PR2 robot, equipped with arms, to university researchers and technology companies such as Samsung at a base price of $280,000. The machine can fetch drinks, fold towels and perform other tasks.

?It?s a little bit of Wall-E,? spokesman Tim Smith said.

RE2 Inc. in Lawrenceville, which focuses on robotics for defense uses, donated an $850,000 Robotic Nursing Assistant that can lift a patient to the University of Texas at Arlington?s Research Institute. The institute is working on technology to help wounded veterans, older people and workers who lift heavy objects.

Such research is under way worldwide.

In Switzerland, the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the University of Zurich in March plans to introduce Roboy, a human-looking robot with soft skin.

Hector, a robot being built in Europe, is ?far ahead of anything we have ongoing here,? said Tobe, who advocates for public-private investment to advance robot research.

Some say the path ahead for robots remains unclear.

Henry Thorne recalls his short-lived venture with Cye, a robot he made in 1998 to transport items and vacuum a room. He priced it at $799 and sold 400, which was not enough to sustain a business.

Thorne later became a founder of 4Moms, a Strip District child products company that makes the mamaRoo, a moving robotic seat to soothe fussy infants.

?We sell 10,000 mamaRoos a month,? he said. ?My experience with personal robots is that they lack a raison d??tre, a reason to be.?

When Thorne looks at robots such as mObi, ?I ask, ?What?s it for??? He?ll consider the market again when someone provides a good answer.

Siddhartha Srinivasa, an associate professor at Carnegie Mellon University?s Robotics Institute, cites nagging questions on how to make advanced robots with a low enough cost, say $5,000, that are useful in a home. Robots perform well in orderly labs but might not in a messy household, Srinivasa said.

Many makers of consumer goods sell products with robotics technology, such as lawn mowers with sensors. Advanced robotics technology could become part of everyday appliances, Srinivasa said. A refrigerator could sense when the milk supply runs low and notify the homeowner by text message, for example.

Today?s consumer robots range from $50 toys to pricier humanoids that can close a garage door but mostly are for entertainment, said Dan Kara, president of robotics services company Electra Studios Inc. of Upton, Mass. The latter devices more commonly are found in Japan and Korea.

?People are paying $5,000 for something that doesn?t do that much,? Kara said. Robots for home use ?seems to be a market in search of itself.?

How Berwyn Back Pain Relief Is Done Naturally Through ...

To successfully dispose of various types of pains that affect the body is the biggest concern of the Berwyn chiropractor. He is well skilled on ways to bring about relief to sufferers of pain using an unorthodox medical care called chiropractic. Backache is major among the numerous ailments which are brought to his office every day.

So many people suffer from back ache. As a matter of fact, it is common in all spheres of life. It is due to common factors such as stress, fatigue, poor posture and carrying very heavy objects. It begins as a slight pain, but if left unattended for long, it could result in excruciating pain levels that can even affect the ability to perform everyday normal activities.

As soon as aches are noticed in the back region, proper arrangement must be made to eradicate it. A chiropractic center could be visited in order to get the attention of the doctor. Other options may be sought also.

Back soreness starts off from the spinal cord which actually is the mid-point of every human musculoskeletal network. Pains result when some spine bones shift out of their standard position. This action causes tension to build up in the tendons, muscles, and nerves since the troubled bones exert a lot of pressure on the entire back region.

The factors earlier mentioned are largely responsible for shifting of bones in the spine. Out of them all, stress is the most critical. Quite a lot of persons carry on with work for hours unending without taking time out to rest in between. This is very harmful to general wellness because it leads to accumulation of stress. Body muscles begin to get stiffened and tired due to this and back pain is produced.

Chiropractic has several therapies for alleviating backache. These include laser therapy, spinal decompression, and sactive release. Another very effective therapy is massage. All these are natural techniques that completely take care of back pain. Besides these, health tips like resting properly, eating well, and exercising regularly are encouraged and taught by the Berwyn chiropractor.

Discover how chiropractic care helps relieve leg, back, hip and wrist pain safely, now. You can also find more information about a highly respected Berwyn chiropractor at http://www.creativechiropracticsolutions.com today.

Why wolves are forever wild, but dogs can be tamed

Friday, January 18, 2013

Dogs and wolves are genetically so similar, it's been difficult for biologists to understand why wolves remain fiercely wild, while dogs can gladly become "man's best friend." Now, doctoral research by evolutionary biologist Kathryn Lord at the University of Massachusetts Amherst suggests the different behaviors are related to the animals' earliest sensory experiences and the critical period of socialization. Details appear in the current issue of Ethology.

Until now, little was known about sensory development in wolf pups, and assumptions were usually extrapolated from what is known for dogs, Lord explains. This would be reasonable, except scientists already know there are significant differences in early development between wolf and dog pups, chief among them timing of the ability to walk, she adds.

To address this knowledge gap, she studied responses of seven wolf pups and 43 dogs to both familiar and new smells, sounds and visual stimuli, tested them weekly, and found they did develop their senses at the same time. But her study also revealed new information about how the two subspecies of Canis lupus experience their environment during a four-week developmental window called the critical period of socialization, and the new facts may significantly change understanding of wolf and dog development.

When the socialization window is open, wolf and dog pups begin walking and exploring without fear and will retain familiarity throughout their lives with those things they contact. Domestic dogs can be introduced to humans, horses and even cats at this stage and be comfortable with them forever. But as the period progresses, fear increases and after the window closes, new sights, sounds and smells will elicit a fear response.

Through observations, Lord confirmed that both wolf pups and dogs develop the sense of smell at age two weeks, hearing at four weeks and vision by age six weeks on average. However, these two subspecies enter the critical period of socialization at different ages. Dogs begin the period at four weeks, while wolves begin at two weeks. Therefore, how each subspecies experiences the world during that all-important month is extremely different, and likely leads to different developmental paths, she says.

Lord reports for the first time that wolf pups are still blind and deaf when they begin to walk and explore their environment at age two weeks. "No one knew this about wolves, that when they begin exploring they're blind and deaf and rely primarily on smell at this stage, so this is very exciting," she notes.

She adds, "When wolf pups first start to hear, they are frightened of the new sounds initially, and when they first start to see they are also initially afraid of new visual stimuli. As each sense engages, wolf pups experience a new round of sensory shocks that dog puppies do not."

Meanwhile, dog pups only begin to explore and walk after all three senses, smell, hearing and sight, are functioning. Overall, "It's quite startling how different dogs and wolves are from each other at that early age, given how close they are genetically. A litter of dog puppies at two weeks are just basically little puddles, unable to get up or walk around. But wolf pups are exploring actively, walking strongly with good coordination and starting to be able to climb up little steps and hills."

These significant, development-related differences in dog and wolf pups' experiences put them on distinctly different trajectories in relation to the ability to form interspecies social attachments, notably with humans, Lord says. This new information has implications for managing wild and captive wolf populations, she says.

Her experiments analyzed the behavior of three groups of young animals: 11 wolves from three litters and 43 dogs total. Of the dogs, 33 border collies and German shepherds were raised by their mothers and a control group of 10 German shepherd pups were hand-raised, meaning a human was introduced soon after birth.

At the gene level, she adds, "the difference may not be in the gene itself, but in when the gene is turned on. The data help to explain why, if you want to socialize a dog with a human or a horse, all you need is 90 minutes to introduce them between the ages of four and eight weeks. After that, a dog will not be afraid of humans or whatever else you introduced. Of course, to build a real relationship takes more time. But with a wolf pup, achieving even close to the same fear reduction requires 24-hour contact starting before age three weeks, and even then you won't get the same attachment or lack of fear."

Iran courts restart of nuke talks, but snubs U.N.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ? Iran has floated specific dates for reopening talks with the U.S. and other world powers about its nuclear program. At the same time, Tehran has left U.N. nuclear inspectors empty-handed when it comes to addressing Western suspicions that it's conducting tests related to nuclear weapons.

Iran's split personality over creating space for possible nuclear concessions has complicated calculations by Washington and allies on whether to head back into negotiations more than six months after the last round ended in stalemate. But it also offers insight into Tehran's strategy as Western sanctions press harder on the economy, experts say.

Iranian leaders know the only route to ease the economic pressures ? and possibly undercut threats of military action by Israel ? is through potential deal-making with six world powers ? the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council plus Germany.

Making grand gestures to the U.N.'s nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, would likely bring praise from the West, but it is unlikely to roll back sanctions, which have so far reduced Iran's critical oil exports by 45 percent.

"Tehran ... sees any cooperation with the IAEA as a potential bargaining chip that is better reserved for the talks that really matter," said Suzanne Maloney, an Iranian affairs expert at the Brookings Institution in Washington. "The Iranians want a payout and the IAEA cannot deliver that."

Iran has proposed restarting talks as early as next month. But while Iran's desire to revive dialogue with the world powers suggests an acknowledgment that the sanctions have taken a bite out of its economy, there still are no clear signals on whether it means a greater willingness to make concessions.

Three rounds of talks last year made no headway on the West's main demand: That Iran halt its highest-level uranium enrichment.

Washington and others worry this level of nuclear fuel, at 20 percent enrichment, could be turned into warhead-grade material much faster than the 3.5 percent enriched uranium needed for Iran's lone energy-producing reactor.

Iran insists it does not seek nuclear arms ? repeatedly citing a 2005 edict by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei that called atomic weapons a violation of Islamic tenets ? and says it only wants reactors for electricity and medical research.

For Iranian negotiators, the only workable compromise is seen as part of a reciprocal pact: The easing of Western sanctions in return for promises to trim uranium enrichment. So far, however, the U.S. and its allies have given no indication of favoring such a deal. Instead, they have moved to further tighten the economic squeeze and isolate Iran.

Iranian envoys appear to favor getting the dialogue restarted to at least keep channels open with Washington. That could also gain support from the Obama administration, which favors diplomatic efforts to end the nuclear standoff. Critics, including Israel's Prime Benjamin Netanyahu, contend Iran is only seeking to drag out negotiations while it expands its stockpile of enriched uranium.

"Iran's leaders are adopting a grand-bargain strategy," said Mehrzad Boroujerdi, a Syracuse University professor who follows Iranian affairs. "They don't want to get bogged down with the IAEA and see the only way to get what they want ? meaning getting some sanctions off their back ? is through the world power talks."

But Iran's cold shoulder to U.N. envoys could further weaken Western interest in reopening talks, leading to another dead end.

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Friday that the U.S. was disappointed that "once again" Iran and the IAEA failed to agree on allowing inspectors to visit a military site, known as Parchin, where the U.N. agency suspects Iran might have carried out nuclear weapon trigger tests.

The agency has visited Parchin twice ? the last time in 2005. But at the time, it did not have access to satellite imagery and new intelligence presumably supplied by the United States, Israel and other IAEA member states. Iran says it wants assurances from the IAEA that the Parchin file will be closed for good if it allows another tour of Parchin and nothing is detected.

Herman Nackaerts, who headed the IAEA team, said the two sides would meet again on Feb. 12 in the Iranian capital. That's after Iran's proposed timeframe to restart talks with the world powers talks. The official IRNA news agency reported that envoys were working on an early February resumption.

There has been no official response from Washington or the European Union's foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, but reopening talks that quickly appears difficult without even an agreement on where they would be held.

Iranian authorities, meantime, have been increasingly candid about the blows from sanctions, including plans for an austerity budget in March that will include new and highly unpopular taxes. Last week, the head of parliament's budget committee, Gholam Reza Kateb, said Iran's revenues from oil and gas exports have dropped by 45 percent. The country's currency also has fallen by more than 40 percent since last year.

On Saturday, Iran's IAEA delegate, Ali Asghar Soltanieh, repeated Tehran's insistence that it will never fully halt uranium enrichment, which is permitted under the U.N. nuclear proliferation accords signed by Iran and most other nations.

"Khamenei now has material imperatives as well as some political space to negotiate," said the analyst Maloney. "But any deal must satisfy the hardline base that remains deeply distrustful of the international community and confident in Iran's capacity to withstand hardship."

Another political twist for Iran could be the elections in June to pick a successor to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has been significantly weakened by attempts to challenge the authority of Khamenei and the ruling clerics.

Ahmadinejad's opponents might want to postpone any kind of serious nuclear negotiations with the West until after the elections to avoid giving his administration a higher profile in its final months. At the same time, hardline factions also could be wary of making any kind of major concessions to the West before the vote, which is expected to bring a Khamenei loyalist to office.

"There could be a tendency now to stick to the old, radical approach for now," said Rasool Nafisi, an Iranian affairs analyst at Strayer University in Virginia. "They don't want to be the ones who blink first in the showdowns with the West."

Did Doping Cause Armstrong's Cancer?

Before his disgrace, Lance Armstrong was known for his seven Tour de France victories, his comeback from cancer and the yellow bracelets of his foundation, Livestrong.

Armstrong launched the cancer charity after being diagnosed with a testicular tumor in 1996. The cancer had spread to his abdomen, lungs and brain, but he beat the odds to survive and continue his spectacular ? or notorious ? racing career.

Now that Armstrong's titles have been tainted by his admitted use of performance-enhancing drugs, questions have also been raised about whether those banned substances caused or contributed to his cancer.

The answer is not as clear cut as a confession for cheating.

"One could infer that these agents could potentiate the growth of a cancer cell," said oncologist Dr. Arjun Vasant Balar of NYU Langone Medical Center in New York, describing how steroids, growth hormones and erythropoietin fuel cell division and growth. "Could they create a cancer cell? That's unclear. We don't know."

CLICK HERE to see 10 celebrity confessions.

While studies in cells and lab animals have linked doping agents to cancer, evidence in humans is anecdotal at best.

Lance Armstrong Confesses to Doping in Oprah Interview Watch Video Cyclist Lance Armstrong Apologizes to Livestrong Staff for Doping Scandal Watch Video Lance Armstrong's Winfrey Interview: Expected to Admit to Doping Watch Video

"Several cases of cancers associated to the use of anabolic steroids as doping practice have been reported," said Dr. Lucio Tentori, a cancer researcher at the University of Rome Tor Vergata and author of a 2007 review on doping and cancer risk. "Unfortunately, to evaluate this cancer risk in controlled clinical studies is difficult since these substances are frequently used at very high doses and in combination with other licit or illicit drugs."

Despite the dearth of human research, Tentori wrote in his report that "athletes should be made aware that long-term treatment with doping agents might increase the risk of developing cancer."

Armstrong might have suspected as much, according to Betsy Andreu, the wife of Armstrong's former friend and teammate Frankie Andreu. Andreu testified testified in an insurance-related civil suit that the cycling champ told his oncologists he had used steroids, growth hormone and erythropoietin.

"When he stood to gain, it appears he was willing to talk about his rich pharmaceutical intake with his doctors," said Art Caplan, a bioethicist at NYU Langone Medical Center. "If he was worried enough to think there might have been a connection, he should have been worried enough to think lot of other people need to know, too."

"I think he owed it to his fans, particularly the young ones that looked up to him and wanted to train like him to say, 'Maybe my use of performance-enhancing drugs had something to do with it,'" Caplan added.

But cancer is a complex problem triggered by a mix of genetic and environmental factors, meaning doping alone was probably not to blame, according to Balar.

"We can never say definitively, but it's highly unlikely," he said.

Balar stressed that the better-known complications of steroid abuse like bone loss, hormone disruption, hypogonadism, and mood disorders "are far greater concerns than any potential link with early cancer."

While the cause of Armstrong's cancer may never be known, the consequences of his doping activity and attempts to conceal it are quickly piling up. Five weeks after stepping down from the Livestrong board of directors, Armstrong "expressed his regret" to staff Wednesday and asked that they "stay focused on serving people affected by cancer," according to a statement from the foundation.

Livestrong did not respond to ABC News' request for comment on whether doping might have played a role in Armstrong's cancer, but the charity voiced plans to distance itself from the disgraced athlete in a statement by "charting a strong, independent course forward that is focused on helping people overcome financial, emotional and physical challenges related to cancer."

Recipe: Spicy Beet, Leek and Walnut Salad - Mother Nature Network

Spicy Beet, Leek and Walnut Salad

This tasty salad offers lots of great textures and a wonderful mixture of earthy and tart with a nice piquant dressing.

Thu, Jan 17 2013 at 5:33 PM

My son Hugh is a vegetarian, and two years ago for Christmas I gave him Yotam Ottolenghi's wonderful cookbook, "Plenty." This Christmas, Hugh reciprocated with "Jerusalem" by Ottolenghi and his restaurant partner, Sami Tamimi. Both books have a strange pillowy cover to them, as though the authors were offering a soft place to lay my head should the need to nap overcome me while cooking dinner. No sleep for me though; there is too much excitement on offer in the pages of this cookbook.

?

I love Middle Eastern food, but I must say that beets are not a vegetable that springs to mind when I think of the cuisine of Jerusalem. Turns out that Georgian Jews brought their Russian, Persian and Turkish food influences to Jerusalem, bringing along beets and dressing them with walnuts and pomegranates, which fit in nicely with the neighborhood. This is a terrific salad, with lots of great textures and a wonderful mixture of earthy and tart with a nice piquant dressing.

?

Beets take a while to cook, so the total time looks daunting, but this was a very easy recipe to make. Although the recipe says the leeks should cook for 10 minutes, mine cooked for closer to 20. If you are one of those people who hates cilantro, just substitute some flat leaf parsley.

  2. Wrap the beets individually in aluminum foil and roast them in the oven to 1 to 1 1/2 hours, depending on their size. Once cooked, you should be able to stick a small knife through to the center easily. Remove from the oven and set aside to cool. Once cool enough to handle, peel the beets, halve them and cut each half into wedges 3/8 inch thick at the base. Put in a medium bowl and set aside.
  3. Place the leeks in a medium pan with salted water, bring to a boil, and simmer for 10 minutes, until just cooked; it's important to simmer them gently and not to overcook them, so they don't fall apart. Drain and refresh under cold water, then use a very sharp serrated knife to cut each segment into 3 smaller pieces and pat dry. Transfer to a bowl, separate from the beets, and set aside.
  4. While the vegetables are cooking, mix together all the dressing ingredients (starting with walnuts through salt) and leave to one side for at least 10 minutes for all the flavors to come together.
  5. Divide the walnut dressing and the cilantro equally between the beets and the leeks and toss gently. Taste both and add more salt if needed. To put the salad together, spread most of the beets on a serving platter, top with some arugula, then most of the leeks, then the remaining beets, and finish with more leeks and arugula. Sprinkle over the pomengranate seeds, if using, and serve.

White House to unveil gun violence measures on Wednesday: source

DEAR ABBY: Recently my husband, "Byron," and I had an argument, and he took off in his truck. He didn't return until after work the following day. He had he spent the night at our friend "Arlene's" house. She is divorced and lives alone. Byron assures me "nothing happened" between them. I want to believe him, but ever since this incident, Arlene will not look me in the eye or speak to me.I love Byron and trusted him until now. It hurts to think that our marriage may be ruined over a stupid argument. ...

Foot soldiers of the immune system

Jan. 13, 2013 ? Researchers at McGill University and the Research Center for Molecular Medicine (CeMM) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences have discovered the molecular blueprint behind the IFIT protein. This key protein enables the human immune system to detect viruses and prevent infection by acting as foot soldiers guarding the body against infection. They recognize foreign viral ribonucleic acid (RNA) produced by the virus and act as defender molecules by potentially latching onto the genome of the virus and preventing it from making copies of itself, blocking infection. The findings are a promising step towards developing new drugs for combatting a wide range of immune system disorders.

The discovery was made by teams led by Bhushan Nagar, a professor in the Department of Biochemistry at McGill's Faculty of Medicine, and Dr. Giulio Superti-Furga at the CeMM. Building on the 2011 CeMM discovery by Dr. Andreas Pichlmair that IFIT proteins unexpectedly interact directly with the viral RNA to inhibit its replication, the group's latest discovery reveals the molecular mechanism behind how IFIT proteins capture only the viral RNA and distinguishes it from normal molecules belonging to the host. Their research will be published on January 13 in the journal Nature.

"Infection by pathogens such as viruses and bacteria are caught by a layer of the immune system that consists of guard-like proteins constantly on the lookout for foreign molecules derived from the pathogen," explains Prof. Nagar. "Once the pathogen is detected, a rapid response by the host cell is elicited, which includes the production of an array of defender molecules that work together to block and remove the infection. The IFIT proteins are key members of these defender molecules."

When a virus enters a cell, it can generate foreign molecules such as RNA with three phosphate groups (triphosphate) exposed at one end, in order to replicate itself. Triphosphorylated RNA is what distinguishes viral RNA from the RNA found in the human host. During this time, the receptors of the innate immune system are usually able to detect the foreign molecules from the virus and turn on signaling cascades in the cell that leads to the switching on of an antiviral program, both within the infected and nearby uninfected cells. Hundreds of different proteins are produced as part of this anti-viral program, which work in concert to resist the viral infection.

In the Nagar lab, McGill graduate student Yazan Abbas used an arsenal of biophysical techniques, most notably X-ray crystallography, to capture the IFIT protein directly in the act of recognizing the foreign RNA. The work shed light on the interaction between IFITs and RNAs. The researchers determined that IFIT proteins have evolved a specific binding pocket, chemically compatible and big enough to fit only the triphoshorylated end of the viral RNA. Human RNA is not able to tightly interact with this pocket, thereby circumventing autoimmune reactions.

"Once the IFIT protein clamps down on the viral RNA, the RNA is then presumably prevented from being used by the virus for its own replication," says Superti-Furga, "Since many viruses, such as influenza and rabies, rely on triphosphate RNA for their lifecycle, these results have widespread implications in understanding how our cells interact with viruses and combat them."

This work could help advance the development of new drugs for combating a wide array of immune system disorders. "Our findings will be useful for the development of novel drugs directed at IFIT proteins, particularly in cases where it is necessary to dampen the immune response, such as inflammation or cancer therapy," says Nagar.

NFL Playoffs Breakdown: San Francisco 49ers vs. Green Bay Packers

This is a tough one.

A really tough one.

Both the Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers give you a lot of reasons to believe they can win today, making it extremely difficult to determine who has the advantage. Let?s take a look.

The San Francisco 49ers have one of the most lethal running attacks in the league.

The Packers have the NFL?s deepest receiving corp.

The 49ers have some banged up receivers, however, they also still have Michael Crabtree, Vernon Davis, and a reduced but still-effective Randy Moss.

The Green Bay Packers have a recently re-energized defense, aided in great part by the return of Charles Woodson.

The 49ers have an elite defense that gives QBs nightmares, and even with an injured Justin Smith, they will likely give Rodgers fits all day. San Fran also boasts a very impressive secondary that may be able to stick with Green Bay receivers at times and will be aided by safety Dashon Goldson.

The Packers have their own pass rush that could give Colin Kaepernick trouble.

The 49ers are playing at home.

The Packers have Aaron Rodgers.

San Francisco?s recent QB change stretches the field and gives defenses more to worry about.

Aaron Rodgers.

Neither team is perfect, but both are elite in several areas. And with home field advantage, San Francisco appears to have the edge. In my book, though, the Packers clearly have the edge with the 2011 NFL MVP. These teams can be compared right down the line, and while they are somewhat different, it would be hard to pick which is clearly better. Except in one regard.

Quarterback.

I would go with Kaepernick over Alex Smith every time. Every. Single. Time. He can make a lot of throws that Smith would never have even attempted, but it is his legs that really allow him to be a game breaker. A team just needs to forget about him once and he?ll scamper down the field for a big play.

Again, it?s a no contest. If I had to pick between Kaepernick and Smith to lead my team, it?d be Kaepernick every time. But neither of them is Aaron Rodgers. With various factors canceling out others, the only apparent disparity is at the most important position in professional sports, and that is the tipping point for me. Kaepernick, for all his greatness, is a first-year starter and has never played in a playoff game. He?s never had to step out on the field and lead his team to victory against one of the NFL?s best quarterbacks. He?s never been down in a playoff game and had to fight his way back into it. I think he is very capable of doing so and could end up being an elite quarterback down the line, but the lack of experience isn?t a minor issue.

Rodgers hasn?t just won a playoff game or two, he?s a Super Bowl champion. Past accomplishments mean nothing in the NFL playoffs; past experience means a whole lot. ?

Politics ? U.S. to urge Japan, S Korea to mend ties

WASHINGTON ?

A high-level U.S. delegation will urge key allies Japan and South Korea to mend strained ties that have hurt security cooperation. It will also likely remind the new government in Tokyo that any disavowal of its apology for the use of sex slaves in World War II would make matters worse.

Senior officials from the State Department, Pentagon and White House will travel to Seoul and Tokyo this week after recent elections in both countries. The two Northeast Asian democracies have fallen out over a territorial dispute and Japan?s attitude toward its colonial past.

The trip also takes place against a backdrop of more threatening tensions between Japan and China over disputed islands in the East China Sea. Media reports suggest Japan?s new government may take a tougher line on what it considers repeated Chinese incursions into its territorial waters.

The top U.S. diplomat for East Asia, Kurt Campbell, says the U.S. will urge ?care and caution? in that maritime dispute. The tiny islands are called Senkaku in Japanese and Diaoyu in Chinese, are controlled by Japan but also claimed by China and Taiwan.

Tensions intensified after Tokyo bought the islands from their Japanese private owners in September. The U.S., which could be compelled under treaty obligations to assist Japan in event of a conflict, has since called for ?cooler heads? to prevail, but the dispute rumbles on.

A trough in relations between Japan and South Korea has further clouded the outlook in the region, at a time when the Obama administration is looking to foster security cooperation between its allies. That?s a key plank of America?s ?pivot? toward the Asia-Pacific as it shifts diplomatic and military attention from Iraq and Afghanistan.

In June, a planned intelligence-sharing pact between Japan and South Korea was derailed. Then in August, a visit by South Korea?s outgoing President Lee Myung-bak to small islands claimed by both nations led to angry exchanges between them.

?After a period of very substantial warming between Japan and South Korea, there have been tensions over the course of the last year or so that undermined the quality of the relationship,? Campbell said at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a Washington think tank. He said a key reason for the U.S. delegation?s visit was to ensure both governments are committed to ?rebuilding? their ties.

Japan?s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe sent a representative last week to meet with South Korea?s president-elect Park Geun-hye, offering some hope for rapprochement. But suggestions that Abe may disavow a 1993 statement in which Japan apologized for the suffering of so-called ?comfort women? during World War II risks riling South Korea.

The U.S. will be quietly urging Abe?s government against such a step, said Victor Cha, a former White House director of East Asia policy. But he added that the U.S will not want to be seen as publicly mediating in a touchy historical dispute.

?You will never succeed and both sides will end up hating you for it,? Cha said.

Historians say up to 200,000 women, mainly from the Korean peninsula and China, were forced to provide sex for Japanese soldiers in military brothels. But rightists in Japan question whether the women were coerced by the military to be prostitutes.

Campbell will be accompanied by Assistant Secretary of Defense Mark Lippert and National Security Council Senior Director for Asian Affairs Daniel Russel. They arrive in Seoul on Tuesday and travel to Tokyo Wednesday ? a prelude to a trip to Washington by Japan?s new Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida that Friday.

Cha said he also expected the U.S. delegation to sound out Park?s transition team in South Korea on how she will approach relations with North Korea, including on how to respond should Pyongyang follow up last month?s long-range rocket launch with a nuclear test.
